This course examines the nature of politics and government in Malawi. It examines the evolution of political institutions, government machinery and the political system in Malawi. It also looks at the relationship between the political actors and political activity at national and sub-national levels.

The course explores the evolution of African politics. Specifically, it traces the development of African political systems across three periods namely: the pre-colonial era; the colonial era; and the postcolonial/neo-colonial period between independence and today. The course balances regional knowledge with broader comparative theory in order to address questions about salient features of the African polity especially its democratic trajectory and political culture.
